The University of Oulu (UOulu), founded in 1958, is an international science university, which creates new knowledge, well-being, and innovations for the future through research and education. At UOulu, researchers produce nearly 3000 scientific publications each year and several new research-driven start-ups take off every year. UOulu is usually ranked in the top three per cent. Affiliated to the Centre for Advanced Steels Research (CASR), Materials and Mechanical Engineering (MME) is a research unit of UOulu dedicated to the research, development, processing, properties, and applications of steels.
UOulu has the state-of-the-art facilities for materials testing, characterization, evaluation and modelling. AID4GREENEST will benefit from the following MME research equipment: Gleeble 3800 Thermo-mechanical simulator, Laboratory rolling mill equipped with direct quenching facilities, Zwick Vibrophore 100 Mechanical testing equipment, Simulation software (Thermo-Calc (R), Dictra (R), TC-Prisma (R), JmatPro (R)), besides EBSD software and advanced numerical simulation and modelling codes and programming languages. The group can perform material analyses using following techniques: STEM, FESEM, XPS, XRD and EPMA. For the computational simulations there are 12 high performance computers that have number of CPUs ranging from 4-20 and processor speeds up to 4.2 GHz, dedicated to fast parallel simulations, shared within the simulation team.
Prof. Mahesh Somani is presently leading the research activities of various academy and EU projects at UO, besides taking care of international collaborative research and supervision of 3 doctoral researchers. During his research career spanning over 39 years, Prof. Somani has completed over 20 research projects and authored nearly 200 technical papers and 25 technical reports and has 2 patents to his credit. His academic/research interests include physical simulation and modelling, technology of alloy steels, physical metallurgy of direct quenching, phase transformations, static and dynamic restoration mechanisms, dynamic materials modelling, and strength of metallic materials.
Postdoctoral researcher Aarne Pohjonen has been working with topics connected to numerical modelling for more than 15 years and his main research studies are linked to computational materials science. He obtained his PhD from the University of Helsinki in the year 2013 for his research on molecular dynamics simulations of stress concentration caused by a void below a copper surface He has completed more than 5 research projects and has over 50 publications in peer-reviewed journals. During last 9 years, his research was mainly focussed on numerical modelling of microstructure evolution in steels. His main research interests are numerical simulation of phase transformations, cooling, heat conduction and heat transfer, and recovery and recrystallization.
Rishabh Bharadwaj currently serves as a Doctoral Researcher within the Materials and Mechanical Engineering department at the Faculty of Technology at the University of Oulu. He earned his Master of Technology degree specializing in Steel Technology from the esteemed Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, in India. With nearly a decade of industrial experience in the steel domain, encompassing both process control and product research, his areas of interest include Thermomechanical processing, Microstructural characterization, Phase transformation, Physical simulations, and Numerical modelling.
