Mary Osorio Baena (EurA AG) presented two complementary AID4GREENEST contributions at this year’s SDEWES Conference, showcasing both the project’s sustainability findings and its long-term vision for the future of the European steel industry.

A key focus of the presentation was the AID4GREENEST roadmap for the European steel sector towards 2050, developed by EurA AG as part of the project. Building on existing European steel-transition strategies, the roadmap identifies critical gaps and integrates lessons learned throughout AID4GREENEST into six strategic pathways for action. These pathways connect advances in materials characterisation, modelling, environmental assessment and data-driven technologies with practical priorities for future industrial implementation.

The roadmap places technological innovation within the broader context of industrial transformation, addressing challenges spanning the entire value chain, from materials design and product development to demonstration activities and large-scale industrial deployment. By linking research outcomes with implementation requirements and monitoring frameworks, it provides a structured pathway for accelerating the transition towards a more sustainable and competitive European steel sector.

The presentation highlighted how AID4GREENEST is helping to bridge the gap between research and industry, ensuring that project innovations can support real-world decision-making and contribute to the long-term decarbonisation and sustainability goals of the European steel industry.

This contribution reflects the project’s commitment not only to developing new AI-enabled technologies, but also to creating the strategic frameworks needed to maximise their impact beyond the lifetime of the project.
